Proposed Itinerary: Revolutionary Trail
Sunday ARRIVE HAVANA
Arrive in Havana, check into 3*-4* hotel in Old Havana. Dinner
Monday HAVANA
Short briefing meeting with your guide after breakfast and then depart for guided walking tour of Old Havana. Lunch stop in local restaurant (lunch not included). Vintage car drive in afternoon to Plaza de la Revolucion and other historic sites in the city. Pre-dinner cocktail at Bar Floridita - famous for its daiquiris, the favourite tipple of regular client Ernest Hemingway when he lived in Havana. Return to hotel. Dinner and free evening.
Tuesday TRAVEL TO SANTIAGO DE CUBA
After breakfast, transfer to Havana airport for flight to Santiago de Cuba. Arrive early afternoon, transfer into town and check into local Cuban homestay accommodation, single rooms. Santiago is the second city of Cuba and lies on the south coast close to the Sierra Maestra mountains. It is called the ‘cradle of the revolution' as it was here that Fidel and his followers gained most popular support in the fifties and plotted to overthrow the Batista regime. Lunch stop and late afternoon guided city tour by coach with visits to the Santa Ifigenia cemetery (Jose Marti mausoleum), San Juan Hill and the Vista Alegre barrio. Continue to El Morro castle at the mouth of Santiago Bay. Return to hotel. Dinner and free evening. (Todays itinerary will depend on flight arrival time from Havana).
Wednesday SANTIAGO DE CUBA
After breakfast, guided visit of Moncada Barracks where the first attack by Fidel Castro against Batista troops took place. Visit to local community project/local dance company rehearsal. Lunch stop in local restaurant. Afternoon guided visit to the Museo de la Lucha Clandestina (Museum of the Resistance Fighters). Rest of afternoon free to explore Santiago. Dinner in local restaurant and accompanied evening out to local live music venue.
Thursday SANTIAGO DE CUBA - BAYAMO
After breakfast, set off for Bayamo, the town where the Cuban national anthem was written. Short walking tour of historic city centre and check into 3* hotel. Visit Carlos Manuel de Cespedes house. Return to hotel for dinner. Rest of evening free.
Friday LA COMANDANCIA/LA PLATICA
Early morning departure for Santo Domingo and the Pico Turquino national park. Jeep/truck transfer to trail head and short hike to La Comandancia de la Plata, Fidel's secret base in the mountains with local specialist guide (3km). Picnic lunch included. If time permits, walk to La Platica eco-community (4km). Return to Santo Domingo, and on to Bayamo for dinner in hotel and free evening.
Saturday BAYAMO - CAMAGUEY
Breakfast and departure for Camaguey. Lunch on arrival. Afternoon guided walking tour of the city centre. Dinner at hotel and free evening.
Sunday CAMAGUEY - TRINIDAD
Travel to Trinidad. Check into hotel. Afternoon walking tour of historic area of the city. Dinner in hotel and free evening.
Monday SUGAR MILL VALLEY
Depart after breakfast for full day guided visit of Sugar Mill Valley and the Torre Iznaga (slave tower) near Trinidad. Lunch in local restaurant. Both of these lie within another of Cuba's UNESCO World Heritage sites. Return to Trinidad in the afternoon with time to go to the beach or relax in town. Dinner and overnight.
Tuesday SANTA CLARA - HAVANA
After breakfast, depart for Havana via Santa Clara. Lunch stop on arrival in Santa Clara and afternoon guided visit to the Tren Blindado and Che memorial. Travel on to Havana, check into 3* hotel. Final night dinner in restaurant in Old Havana.
Wednesday HAVANA and END OF TRIP
After breakfast, guided visit to the Museum of the Revolution. Check out of hotel at midday. End of trip.
