Salvador da Bahia is a vibrant, colourful city in Northeast Brazil full of music and dance, the undoubted capital of Afro-Brazilian culture. Founded in 1549, it was a former capital of Brazil and to this day retains a unique cultural and racial blend. The annual carnival is renowned for its all night street parties and parades, whilst the historic centre retains its impressive colonial architecture, baroque squares and traditional food stalls.

Our school is located 5 minutes on foot from the beach in the Barra district of the city, a fashionable up-market residential area with good shops, and affordable restaurants and bars just 15 minutes from the historic centre of the city.

Minimum age is 18 years.

Cultural activities and excursions are offered to help students discover the city and local culture e.g. museum visits, city tours, or nights out.

Accommodation is available in local homestays or guesthouses (pousadas).

Transfers: a return transfer from Salvador da Bahia Airport costs £90

Public holidays: the school will close on 1 Jan, 13 - 21 Feb (Carnival), 2/21 Apr, 1 May, 3/24 Jun, 2 Jul, 7 Sep, 12 Oct, 2/15 Nov, 25 Dec 2010 and no classes will be held on these days.

General and Intensive Portuguese Courses

Courses suitable for all levels, maximum group size = 9 students, 1 lesson = 50 minutes.

Supplementary cookery, dance, music and percussion classes

Classes take place in the afternoon to coincide with morning language tuition. The supplementary courses are subject to a minimum number of 3-4 participants and can be arranged while at the school.

Brazilian cookery

Lessons include cooking ingredients and teaching materials, a booklet with recipes, basic vocabulary and some facts about the traditional historical and cultural background of Bahian and Brazilian Cuisine.

Brazilian dance or music

A professional teacher gives a general introduction to different rhythms and dances including Samba, Lambada, Forro and Capoeira. The teacher will explain the history, tradition and development of Brazilian dance. Students will be prepared for Carnival, for a better understanding of Candomblé rituals, or for future participation in Capoeira.

Accommodation in Salvador da Bahia

Accommodation is available in local homestays or guest houses (pousadas). Arrivals should be on Sunday and departures on Saturday morning (1 week = 6 nights, 2 weeks = 13 nights, extra week = 7 nights etc.).
