Learn Spanish in Sucre, Bolivia 

Bolivia is a landlocked country in the heart of the continent, straddling the Andes mountain range and boasting diverse landscapes and cultures.  It is bordered by Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina, Chile and Peru.  The majestic Andes are at their widest in Bolivia and the two parallel ranges known as cordilleras, which stretch the full length of the country, are separated by an extensive and stunning high plateau, which was part of the original Inca Empire.  Now a democratic republic, Bolivia has much to offer the visitor including the bustling city of La Paz with its colourful market (one of the world's highest cities) and Sucre, the location of our school, which is without doubt the most beautiful colonial city in the country.

Sucre is the constitutional capital of Bolivia (although La Paz is home to more of the government departments) with a population of approximately 250,000.  It is of great historical significance nationally as it was here that General Antonio Jose de Sucre signed the country's Declaration of Independence.  Located in the southern half of the country, Sucre is at 2750m above sea level which provides a temperate climate all year round.  It is known as the "white city" of the Americas due to its well preserved colonial architecture which is painted white, standing out against its shiny red roof tiles.  Home to a busy university, many museums and beautiful parks as well as a lively central square, this is a great place to study Spanish.

Our school is located in a lovely old colonial building, just one block from the central square.  It has 12 spacious classrooms, a library and book exchange, an internet room, 2 video rooms, a kitchen for cookery classes, a cafe and lounge, a small terrace and a colonial style indoor patio.

Courses are available all year round for a variety of ages and levels and ALL courses include accommodation.  Course fees also include a placement test, course materials and completion certificate.  Please click on one of the options below for more details:

Cultural activities and excursions are offered throughout the year to encourage students to discover the city and local culture.  For example: salsa lessons, cookery lessons, sports, treks, visits to museums and churches, cultural shows, etc.

Accommodation is included in the course fees: single room, half board in local homestays, which is the perfect way to be immersed in everyday Bolivian culture.  Shared room homestay accommodation and residence accommodation is also available upon request.

Transfers: for students arriving at Sucre Airport, we can arrange for you to be met by your homestay host, or a representative from the school, and taken to your accommodation.  This service costs £20.

School closure: 1 Jan, 21/22 Feb, 5 Apr, 1/25 May, 11 Jun, 6 Aug and 2 Oct 2012.  The school will be closed on these public holidays and will also close for the festive period on 17 Dec 2012, re-opening on 2 Jan 2013.  No classes will be held on these dates.  All missed classes will be rescheduled.

General and Combination Spanish Courses in Sucre

These courses are designed for those who wish to learn communicative Spanish skills, ideal for use in everyday life.  Course fees include a placement test, course materials and certificate.

Individual Spanish Course in Sucre

One-to-one tuition is ideal for those who would like intensive learning or those who wish to focus on specific topics as lesson content can be tailored to each individual's needs.

Active Spanish Course in Sucre

This course is aimed at those who wish to combine their Spanish lessons with some cultural practice outside of the classroom.  Students can choose between group or individual Spanish tuition to combine with their ‘active learning' which includes fun, cultural activities and excursions, with their teacher or a guide.  The programme varies throughout the year, but will usually include visits to museums, cathedral, markets, etc.  All transport and entrance costs are included.

Spanish Immersion Course in Sucre

This course is aimed at those who want an intensive form of learning as 40 hours per week is a very full timetable for language tuition.  It combines group classes and individual classes, including 5 lunches with your teacher.  This course is not for the faint hearted but is a great way to improve quickly!

Spanish + Flavours of the Andes in Sucre

This course combines Spanish tuition with the opportunity to practise the language outside of the classroom whilst sampling some typical Bolivian cuisine with your teacher.  Students can choose between homestay and residence accommodation.

Discover Bolivia 

This inclusive programme combines Spanish tuition, volunteer work and cultural trips to various areas of Bolivia and students may choose between the 3-week and 4-week options.  Accommodation is included, in either local homestays or a student residence.

1st week  

  • 20 group Spanish lessons
  • Single room, half board homestay accommodation (breakfast + lunch), including one laundry

2nd week

  • Volunteer work in a social project (depending on your language level and interests: orphanage, nursery, day care centre, tutoring, mental hospital, institution for the disabled)
  • Accommodation: Shared room, self-catering, student residence accommodation

Also included for participants on the 3-WEEK PROG:

  • Trip to Tarabuco: interesting town 64km from Sucre which played an important role during the war of independence and now boasts a beautiful market where the locals sell hand woven textiles
  • Show: Bolivian origins

3rd week

For participants on the 3-WEEK PROG:

  • Trip to Potolo: indigenous town famous for its complex woven textiles of figurative abstract forms and geometric designs
  • Full-day excursion following Inca footprints
  • Travel from Uyuni to La Paz by bus, where the programme ends.  La Paz is one of the highest cities in the world, seat of the Bolivian Government
  • Accommodation: full board

For participants on the 4-WEEK PROG:

  • Trip to Tarabuco: interesting town 64km from Sucre which played an important role during the war of independence and now boasts a beautiful market where the locals sell hand woven textiles
  • Trip to Potosí: famous for its mines where 45,000 tons of pure silver were extracted from the 16th to 18th centuries.  A visit to the mines as well as the Mint and then a walk around this beautiful, colonial city
  • Trip to Uyuni: famous for the vast expanse of salt flats, Incahuasi Island with its towering cacti (up to 10m high), colourful, mineral-filled lagoons, geysers, volcanoes and flamingos
  • Travel to La Paz and overnight in hotel there
  • Accommodation: full board

4th week (4-WEEK PROG ONLY)

  • Flight to Rurrenabaque: a town located where the Beni River converges with the tropical Andes and the plains of the Amazon, an area of great biodiversity which offers the opportunity to experience the wildlife as well as the local customs of the rural and indigenous communities
  • Trip to San Miguel del Bala (by boat): an indigenous community where you will volunteer and live for a week (all meals included), helping in all the daily activities (e.g. fishing, hunting, gathering seeds, assisting teacher at the school
  • Return flight from Rurrenabaque to La Paz, where the programme ends
  • Accommodation: full details to be confirmed
